First Meeting is Friday, November 13th!

Brookwood Middle School is pleased to announce that the club schedule has been set for the 2009-2010 school year.  The first club day will be on Friday, November 13th, and students will report to their clubs from 8:10 until 8:50.

The following is a list of the clubs offered for this school year:

Abri-Club-Dabra                                                                  Ms. Thomas     Ms. Graves

Abri -CLUB - Dabra!!  Pick a club, any club..... this club!  If you like to amaze your friends with your newest illusion or trick, then Abri-CLUB-dabra is the club for you!  Card tricks, coin tricks, optical illusions and more await you!  Let's find out if the hand really is quicker than the eye....

Battle of the Books Club                                                                      Mrs. Peak

Do you like to read?  Do you like to compete in trivia style competitions like jeopardy?  Well, this is the club for you!  Our club will read some great books and then have our own competitions where we answer questions from the books we read.  We will compete against each other at the school level during our club meetings, and then have a chance to compete in the Tuscaloosa County Battle of the Books.  Are YOU ready for the Battle of the Books?  Then join our club!

BMS Drama Club                                                                 Ms. Adams

In the Drama club, students will learn how to dramatize different kinds of poetry.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to cast in a play that will be announced at a later date!

Are you looking for a fun, exciting, and rewarding opportunity to inform the faculty, staff, and student body about events affecting Brookwood Middle School?  If so, come be a part of the 20-25 member Newspaper Club.  The Newspaper Club gives students the opportunity to report current events happening around the BMS campus.  Students are taught writing skills, reporting methods, and proper interviewing techniques.

The board game club is for students who like to play board games.  Club time will be spent learning new games and strategies as well as playing old favorites!

Carrom and Cards Club                                                     Mrs. Porter

Carrom is a combination of pool, marbles, and air hockey.  It resembles a game of miniature pool using your hand as the pool cue.  Group members will also explore a variety of card games.  If you are competitive, this club is for you!

Chess Club                                                                                                            Coach Jones    Mr. Hagler

The BMS Chess club will allow both beginning and advanced chess players the opportunity to learn the game from the basic, primary moves up to the levels of strategy that professionals might use.  The club will teach basic concepts to first-time players while allowing experienced competition for players that already have an understanding of the game.

Computer Club                                                                                                     Mrs. Parten

The Computer club is for students of all skill levels, from beginning to advanced.  Each meeting will focus on a different aspect of the computer or different resources the computer can provide in education, home-life and entertainment.  Students will have the opportunity to play games, explore the internet, learn touch typing and word processing skills, explore programs such as Paint, PowerPoint, Print Shop, Photo Story, and others.  This club is limited to 20 students.

Family Career Community Leaders of America is open to any student who has taken Teen Challenges, Teen Living, Or Teen Dynamics this year or in previous years.  FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps youth become strong leaders and addresses important personal, family, work, and societal issues.  There is a $10.00 membership fee.

FFA, the career technical student organization for Agriscience is an integral component of Agriscience Education.  Students develop leadership skills through FFA educational activities that are integrated into classroom instruction.  FFA members also have the opportunity to participate in field trips during the course of the school year.  Students must be enrolled in Agriscience either first or second semester of this school year to join FFA.  There is a $10.00 membership fee.

The fitness club is designed for those are seriously interested in working hard and increasing their level of fitness.  This group will learn about keeping their bodies physically fit and participate in activities to increase their fitness level. Examples of activities include jogging, circuit stations, plyometrics, aerobics, rope jumping, and dance.

The Golf club is designed for students who want to learn the complete game of golf.  Drills, skills, and etiquette of the game will be taught.

In the Hobo club students will develop an understanding of the importance of plants and vegetation.  Members will use the new green house to plant and grow vegetables and flowers and will learn about the global needs of horticulture and botanical science.  The club proposed project for the year is to plant Crape Myrtle trees in the median of  Brookwood Parkway!  Come join the Hobo club and dig in the dirt with us!

The International Travel club introduces students to the exciting world of traveling.  Students will learn about popular tourist destinations around the world and will even taste food from other countries.

The Junior "People for Animal Welfare and Safety" club is a group of students who learn about and promote humane and safe treatment of animals.  Students will have opportunities to learn about different animal welfare organizations and shelters in our area and hear from local veterinarians about pet care  Students will  hopefully get to visit the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter in the spring.

Welcome to the fun world of model cars and airplanes.  We will learn the basic techniques of how to build and repair model cars and planes.  We will also learn how to operate model car and plane radios.  Come join the fun.

Music and Lyrics Club                                         Mrs. Lolley

Do you never leave home without your Ipod?  Do you love discovering new music?  If you are interested in listening to music and reading or writing lyrics, this is the club for you!  Join the Music and Lyrics club to share your favorite songs and lyrics with fellow music lovers and to discuss popular artists and songs.  Lovers of all types of music are welcome.

Students will gain hands on experience with up to date technology. Outside experts will instruct students with hands on instruction using handheld GPS units. Students will learn about the outdoor GPS game called GEOCACHING and learn how the game works. Students will work in the outdoors collecting specimen and entering data in a worldwide network called GLOBE. Students will also become familiar with Google Earth and some of it's potential applications.

Are you interested in dancing, twirling the baton, or spinning the flag?  This club is for anyone who would like to learn or for anyone who already knows how and wants to increase their skill level!  We will work on fundamentals, new tricks, and learn routines.

Photography Club                                                                                                                Ms. Williams

The photography club includes middle school student photographers of a range of skill levels and interests. They meet to share their interests, experiences, and enthusiasm for the craft.  Students interested in learning how to take pictures and how to work with photo editing software are welcome.  The club discusses the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and color, as well as looking at the work of professional photographers.

The prom Club is open to 8th graders only.  Members will choose a theme and plan for the Eighth Grade Spring Formal which will be held in May.  Students must be willing to work on decorations and other activities to make the Spring Formal a success!

Do you want to remember middle school, a special vacation, or an important event?  That's what we do in the Scrapbook club!  Preserve your pictures and memories all at the same time as we get ideas from each other and become creative!

Come join us and have fun playing Spades and other card games while you sharpen your Math skills!  Improve your basic Math operation skills, take a look at probability, and be competitive while having a great time.

Taekwondo Club                                                                                                  Mr. Huggins

The Taekwondo club is for all students who share a passion for martial arts. Whether you love watching movies that display various styles of karate or just need to release some stress, this club is for you. Each student, unless already enrolled in a Taekwondo program, will start off at white belt level, learning the basics of Taekwondo. Students will get a good workout, learn how to defend themselves, as well as learn useful skills for life. The tenets of Taekwondo are as follows: Honor, Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Courage, Community, Strength, Humility and Knowledge. These will be heavily discussed as they are necessary to being a successful martial artist.

The Weather Channel Club will explore the weather.  The activities of the weather club will consist of keeping track of the weather conditions through web-based research and nature exploration as well as adding a weather update to Panther TV each morning!

Wildlife and Fisheries Club                                 Mr. Strickland       Mr. Keeton

The Wildlife and Fisheries club is designed to promote wildlife conservation.  The club will focus on State and Federal programs designed to help hunting and fishing.   Organizations like Buckmasters, Bassmasters, National Wild Turkey Federation, Delta Waterfowl, and Ducks Unlimited will be used to help students understand the importance of protecting the hunting, fishing and outdoor lifestyle.

FCA - Fellowship of Christian Athletes                                                Coach Brown

Meets before school, 7:30, Room 804, on alternate Thursdays.  FCA is a student initiated and student led group of athletes and coaches who meet regularly for fellowship. Through the bond of sports, they reach out to peers with the message of Christ.  FCA is open to all students, but only athletes who are committed to Christ and are actively involved in a local church are allowed to serve in leadership positions.
